No Shame!

Romans 1:16-17, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.””

If there are two verses that simply sum up the book of Romans, these might be them. The good news of Christ is Christ Himself: Jesus came in the flesh, died upon the cross and rose from the grave, declaring that He is the Son of God (Rom 1:4). That gospel message is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes. Those who have faith in Christ & live by their faith in Christ are granted the salvation and righteousness of God because of that glorious gospel of grace.

Some would say: “But I was born into my relationship with God!” Our heritage can be a beautiful thing, but the gospel message is same both for the Jew and the Gentile. If anyone could claim a heritage that would give them special relationship with God, it would be the Jew. After all, they had been the special recipients of the covenant promises of God since the days of Abraham. Certainly they would have more claim to a birthright privilege than any one of us who happened to grow up in the Bible belt of the evangelical United States. Yet the Jew is in just as much need of the power of God to salvation as is the Gentile. We are all in desperate need of His salvation, and it only comes through faith in the gospel of Christ. We must believe.

The question, beloved, is simply this: do you believe? Do you live by faith in Christ? After all, the “just” live by faith – it is by faith that we are justified in the first place. Is your life full of actions for Christ? Praise God, but our actions are not the starting point; Jesus’ actions are. We must believe – we must have faith in who Jesus is and what He has done for us. Then we abide in that faith as we live by faith.

No wonder the apostle Paul writes that he is not ashamed of the gospel of Christ – it is gloriously good news! All those who have faith in Christ can live as we experience the righteousness of God first-hand. Christian, rejoice in the gospel of Christ today! Never think that you ought to be ashamed of the gospel, hiding your faith in a corner until you are around other people who might find it “acceptable.” No, your faith in the gospel of Christ is a marvelous gift of God, through which you (and everyone) can experience the blessings of God. Proclaim it from the rooftops in abundant joy, without shame!
