The Guest of Sinners

Luke 19:7, “But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

Jesus had just encountered wee Zacchaeus, who had climbed a tree just to get a glimpse of the Messiah. Our Lord called out Zacchaeus by name, and inviting Himself to dinner, told the tax collector that He must stay at his house that day. The surrounding crowd was scandalized and was dumbfounded that such a Godly person would seek out the company of such a sinner. Didn’t Jesus know who this man was? How could He bear to associate Himself with such a vile creature?

Yet that was the whole point in Jesus’ incarnation. Jesus came explicitly to seek and save that which was lost, and who is lost except those who are vile and lost in their sin? Zacchaeus is you – Zacchaeus is me – Zacchaeus is all those who are called out by our loving Lord Jesus, who invites Himself into our lives to show us the grace and salvation He offers.

This is not something over which to complain; this is something over which to rejoice! The grace of Christ is indeed scandalous – how dare He deem to love someone like you & me? Yet that’s exactly what He does. In utter humility and submission, the Almighty Word of God put on flesh and dwelt among us. The Infinite Creator became like His finite creation – He who is perfect dwelt among those who were vile – all so that He could save that which was lost.

May we rejoice in the fact that our Lord went to be a guest of a sinner, because that sinner is us.
